Pantone Colour of the Year 2018: Ultra Violet

Ultra Violet (18-3838TC textile nerds), as its name suggests, is an all-out, page popping, vibrant purple hue of which i for one am most definitely a fan. Or my inner 14 year old is anyway, for i insisted my mother paint my entire bedroom this exact shade as a teenager with bed and dressing table canopies to match! I have always held violet in a very high regard and this view was only cemented further in me this week when i learnt that purple was one of the official colours of the Women’s Social and Political Union and the British suffrage movement. The Suffragettes were encouraged to wear white for purity with green and purple sashes to represent hope and dignity respectively. In the year that we celebrate the centenary of the 1918 act that allowed (some) women to vote for the first time, an homage to this particular colour seems appropriate.

Not that that’s why Pantone picked it as their colour of the year, global trend forecasters as they are; they had a much broader message to convey and took their influence from technology, the galaxy, artistic expression and spirituality. Dramatic purples have long been representative of individualism, originality and non-conformative pop culture. On the other hand, they are also symbolic of mysticism, mindfulness, contemplation, sanctity and refuge from an over stimulating world.
