Mid-century modern

This design form covers developments roughly from 1933 – 1965. What happened during that time? World War II, TV, Marilyn Monroe.

Mid-century modern is typified by its clean simplicity and integration with nature. The TV series Mad Men has propelled it back into the spotlight in recent years and it’s now hugely popular.

Here are a few ways of showing it off in your home…

Living Room

Teak and orange are a key feature of mid-century interior design. Think graphic patterns and strong, dark wood. I love this colour combination of grey and orange – bold and subdued at the same time.

Kitchen

Mid-century modern doesn’t have to be dark colours – I love this bright, breezy kitchen cabinet that embodies the classic style of mid-century without the heavy accents. You can pick up a beautiful cabinet at a vintage fair and transform your home into a 1950s pin-up.

Bedroom

Mid-century modern can turn into real modern very quickly, with the help of some bright coloured books and accessories. This neon light instantly revives this dark teak bed stand, creating a fun and retro look.

Bathroom

If you want to make your bathroom a bit rowdier, go for some mid-century modern tiles. You can choose from beautiful classic colours and patterns – I love this mustard and teal combo.
