Inspiration post: nautical

May 16th, 2014 by Debbie

When done properly, nautical touches in your home look fantastic. Often the theme can be over-done and will take over a room, but it can be done subtly, hinting at a home  by the sea without shouting about it. Just add some rope where appropriate, a ship where you can and steer clear of painting your entire room blue and white.

Using rope instead of wood as a banister is a great way to bring a splash of nautical into your home. You don’t need to commit as much as this though – you can wrap some rope around your current banisters to get a similar look.

In the bathroom

This bathroom has ‘subtle seaside’ written all over it. The two mirrors resemble the windows in a submarine, while the blue and cream washed-out cupboards give a hint of beach-house without being overwhelming.

If you’re thinking about updating your window treatment for summer, this nautical blue and red striped fabric from The Loom and Last will brighten up your space in no time. Models of boats always bring a breath of fresh air into the room, and you can never go wrong with a blue and white striped cushion either.

In the entry way

This look is super easy – just hang out all your beach clothes, hats and other accessories in the entry way as if you’ve just come back from the beach. It gives you the chance to show off your summer style and is a good excuse to wear all of it! I love the old piece of beach wood used to hand everything.
